In May 2017 Digby was diagnosed with Perthes Disease, a rare condition that affects the hip.It occurs when the blood supply to the rounded head of the femur is temporarily disrupted and the hip bone starts to crumble. Following complaints of an ache in his knee and thigh plus a constant limp, an x-ray confirmed he had this relatively unknown condition.
Our consultant gave us the disappointing news that Digby had to stop running, jumping, hopping and skipping for as long as possible to prevent further damage. To give this news to a 4 year old child was very difficult indeed and it broke our hearts.
In August 2017 his X-ray came back showing further signs of significant deterioration and he required treatment. Our consultant told us he would need 1 week in hospital completely non weight bearing having traction, followed by 6 weeks with both legs in a broom stick cast. It was tricky at first especially as he had literally just started school. But he took it all in his stride and after 6 weeks in a wheelchair the cast came off. A little wobbly on his legs for a couple of weeks, (a bit like Bambi), he soon strengthened and started to walk more freely.
His most recent appointment on 21st December showed an encouraging X-ray and the findings were very positive. Our consultant has seen some improvement in the flexibility of the joint, some of the cysts in the bone have filled in and there are signs of new bone growth! Whilst we still have a long way to go the news is at least positive for Diggers!
Throughout this last year the Perthes Association, an entirely voluntary organisation which became a registered charity in 1977 have been an amazing support and source of advice. They aim to aid research and find treatment for children with Perthes and hopefully a cure for this crippling disease. So to give something back, raise awareness and show my support to the association and other families also effected by this disease I'm going booze free for one whole year!! That's a long time without a beer 😬 My last drink will be a pint of lager at 1145 pm on 31st December 2017..... Cheers!
If you would like to support me and my cause by giving a donation, no matter how small, it will make my alcohol free journey this year a whole lot easier!!
