Story

I am lucky enough to have been given the opportunity to run the 2019 London Marathon on behalf of the Sick Children’s Trust - a charity very close to my heart.

As many of you will know, in August 2017 our third son Jasper was born. After a difficult labour our beautiful boy was delivered floppy and unresponsive via emergency c-section and was almost immediately rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit at Addenbrooke’s hospital.

When he was just two days old, we were told that Jasper might not survive the weekend. His condition so severe that we were advised not to leave the hospital - in case we weren’t able to get back to him in time.

That is when the Sick Children’s Trust stepped in to help our family. The Sick Children's Trust exists to aid the recovery of sick children by supporting the whole family. They provide free, high-quality ‘Home from Home’ accommodation, as well as emotional and practical support, to families with sick children in hospital in the UK.

They offered us the chance to stay close to Jasper, with facilities to sleep, wash and feed ourselves and importantly where we could take our two other boys when sitting by their brother’s bedside became too much for them.

Chestnut House - the Sick Children’s Trust’s accommodation at Addenbrooke’s - was our home for six weeks. It allowed us to stay by our son’s bedside while he remained desperately ill and then while he started to recover. It meant that even though Jasper couldn’t be at home with his family, we could bring his family to him.

During the time we stayed in Chestnut house, I was not only touched by what the charity had done for our family but by what they offer other families too.

When your child is sick there are so many things to worry about – finding a way to stay close to them shouldn’t be one of them. The Sick Children’s Trust take that worry away and allow you to focus on what is most important – the health of your child.

Jasper is now happy and at home with us all. Obviously, with three young boys, I have lots of time on my hands! What better way to fill it than by training for a Marathon

£30 will support a family for one night.
£60 will support a family for one weekend.
£210 will support a family for one week.
