Story
On Sunday 15 October 2017 I will be running the Leicester Marathon to raise awareness of a life-threatening condition called Addison's Disease that my husband, Gerald, is diagnosed with. Addison's is a rare endocrine disorder, affecting 1 in 100,000 people, that occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol resulting in regular daily steroid medication.
Because the symptoms progress slowly, they are usually ignored until a stressful event on the body like an illness or an accident cause them to become much worse quickly. This is called an addisonian crisis, or acute adrenal insufficiency and emergency medical treatment is required. Should Gerald go into adrenal crisis, left untreated, an addisonian crisis can be fatal.
As you may be aware, Gerald has recently suffered 2 addisonian crises this year, the first quite severe resulting in several fractures to his back after a seizure.
As many of you know, Gerald and I have both been runners for a number of years, so I thought the best way to raise funding for the good work that the Addison Self Help Group do for all the members of the family affected by the disease, I thought I would run in support of the group.
Gerald is slowly getting back into running now after a long spell of recovery after becoming seriously ill and hopefully will be back to full fitness once again after a very difficult few months.
