Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Tragically a patient of ours Danielle Toorish, passed away aged 33 in March 2018 from malignant melanoma. Danielle's father reached out and told us the devastating news. He also told us how Melanoma UK helped Danielle and her family through the course of her illness.

When her father reached out to us and informed us of this devastating news, we knew straight away that we wanted to help support the family in any way we could hence the reason we chose to raise money for Melanoma UK.

Danielle participated in Tough Mudder a few times. We felt that signing up to this challenge and raising money for Melanoma UK would be the perfect way for us to honour her memory.

Here are some facts about Skin Cancer:

Malignant melanoma is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer, with around 42 people being diagnosed every day.

7 people die every day from malignant melanoma in the UK

Malignant melanoma is the eleventh most common cause of cancer death in the UK. Around 2,500 people die from malignant melanoma every year in the UK.

We should all wear sunscreen every single day. Even on the dark, miserable Scottish days. SPF30 at the very least. What is in makeup and moisturisers isn't good enough. It needs to be broad spectrum to protect from harmful UVA (which Ages us) and UVB rays (which Burn us). Our doctors always also strongly advocate that the use of sun beds is avoided at all costs, due to the potentially life threatening effects they can have.

Its safe to say that this challenge is more up some of our team's street than others, but we are all determined and motivated to tackle this muddy, fitness challenge together.!

We are going to raise £5000 for this incredibly important and worthwhile cause and we appreciate anything that you are willing to donate to keep us focussed on the task at hand.

Keep up to date on here with our training progress, including weekly Sunday runs around Arthurs Seat (hangovers are not an accepted excuse for absence!), a night of climbing at Alien Rock and Dr Nestor giving Reformer Pilates a go ... there will be photo evidence!

We want to say a huge thank you in advance for your support. Watch us take on probably the biggest physical challenge any of us have undertaken to date (mmm maybe aside from Lynsey giving birth twice in the past 3 years!!) and let's all make a difference together

About the charity

Melanoma UK was set up in 2007 in memory of Jon Herron. We support patients and families affected by melanoma (skin cancer) and funds raised help to provide that support. We are funding much needed melanoma nurses along with help in vital research. Melanoma is a cruel disease, still without a cure.
