Mitochondria are the "battery packs" in all our cells and sometimes they don't work properly, giving a whole range of symptoms because it can affect all your vital organs.
My sister Emma ("R Emu") became ill in 2010 and was in hospital for a month. It was discovered that she had a serious heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and also ‘leukodystrophy’ which is effectively damage to her brain and nervous system. The doctors suspected that there must be an underlying condition and after waiting 6 years, she has recently received a diagnosis of a very rare mitochondrial disorder - she is only 1 of 3 known cases in the entire world.
The fight to understand and control Emma's symptoms has been a challenge however Emma is a bloody star and copes amazingly. This has inspired me and my Dad to tackle our own challenge in the form of a 5km inflatable assault course!
We'd appreciate any financial support which will ALL go towards research into Mitochondrial disorders.
