In 2011 we walked 14 miles to raise money in aid of the MS Society. That one was to celebrate my big Sister making it to her 50th birthday. Following 2 unsuccessful invasive surgeries on her brain, the doctors had told her that she wouldn’t see 50 so what better way to celebrate than raising money and awareness for the charity that helped her and my family.

This year we are walking 14 miles again - only this time it is in her memory. On 15th May 2017, she lost her fight against MS and I lost my big sister.   

She was diagnosed with relapsing – remitting MS when she was just 28. She had 3 young children, a high end job and was the life and soul of the party. She loved to dance and she loved to laugh.

Her laugh was probably the only thing MS didn’t take from her. Before she became bedridden for the last 12 years of her life she lost her ability to walk, speak, eat, drink and she didn’t even get to hold any of her 7 grandchildren. Nobody would have blamed her for being bitter but she laughed in the face of her illness.   

She fought as hard as she could before the MS became a rare, aggressive form of the illness – even undertaking medical trials and intensive surgeries. When she could no longer physically fight it off, she overcame so many infections to stay with us for another 12 years. I couldn’t have been prouder of her, yet it broke my heart to see my big sister - the one who would protect me when we were kids – lose her basic skills and succumb to an illness that robbed her and my family.

The 14 mile sponsored walk from Brighton to Worthing is our way of raising money and awareness for the MS Society and for honouring my big sis'. It takes place just 3 days before her 1 year anniversary. As we walk, We will be remembering how I felt standing next to my parents as our unit of 4 became 3 and  will be remembering the most courageous woman we have ever had the privilege of knowing.
