Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In June 2015 I will be cycling 1,000km between the 5th-12th of June. I am doing this as a mark of respect and in memory of my Grandad/best friend who passed away in March 2014. I am going to be raising awareness and money for Parkinson's UK.

Over the course of the 8 days we will be taking in several memories of my Grandads life, starting at his birthplace and finishing back at the family home on June 12th (what would've been Grandads 85th Birthday). Members of the family will be taking part over the 8 days which includes climbing Grandads favourite mountain Cadair Idris which we always wanted to climb one last time together. This will be the first time I climb Cadair Idris since Grandad passed away.

Grandad played a huge part in my life and meant the world to me. My sister and I would get dropped off in the mornings at Granny and Grandads and there would always be a bowl of porridge waiting on the table as well as several pieces of toast with his own honey. He would always take us to school and pick us up in the afternoon. I learnt to play my favourite sport (cricket) in his garden and I would always go around with him on the sit on lawn mower. We shared several trips to hospital (for both of us) with some very memorable moments, none more so than when he bought me a congratulations card for passing my exams (in the hospital shop, whilst I was having an x-ray), what he didn't realise was that it was a congratulations card for "twins"!! We loved watching the cricket together and watching the birds outside. He would always be the first to call on a Sunday to find out how I had got on with cricket on the Saturday. Grandad and I both studied at Swansea University albeit 60 years apart, the picture above is of the two of us at Swansea University. The memories don't stop there either.

I have found it hard going since Grandad past away, however, spending time and effort in researching areas of Grandads greatest interests in his early days has made it far easier. I hope that in completing the 8 days I will have paid the respect my Grandad deserves and taking in the areas he loved whilst raising the awareness of Parkinson's.

My Grandad suffered from Parkinson's, so I thought I would tell you a little about it; Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition. Which means that nerve cells in the brain die off, it effects movement, memory and speech. There's currently no cure for Parkinson's and we don't yet know why people get the condition.

Thank you very much for donating to a cause that is extremely close to my heart and the family.
