Great North Run 2022 · 11 September 2022 ·

Imagine being told your toddler you thought was healthy, but perhaps slow to progress, in fact had a rare and devastating disability that would leave them needing lifelong 24/7 care. Rett syndrome changes lives irrevocably. With your support Rett UK is there from the beginning. #ToKnowHerIsToLoveHer

Story

I am running the Great North Run on 11th September 2022 to raise funds and awareness for Rett UK, the only UK charity to provide support to people diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder causing profound and multiple learning and physical disabilities.  Rett UK provides advice and support to professionals and families to ensure management of the symptoms through physiotherapy, eye gaze technology, medical research, allowing those with Rett to live longer and happier lives.

My girlfriend's daughter, Rosalind, has Rett Syndrome.  Unable to communicate verbally or through hand signs, the charity has been a lifeline in supporting her to learn eye gaze technology to communicate her thoughts and personality in ways we never thought she'd be able.

Watching Rosalind's determination has spurred me on, personally, to getting back to training and completing a half marathon within 12 months of finding myself in A&E with a fractured spine and a grade 2 lacerated liver in order to raise funds for Rett UK, who are making a positive difference to Rosalind's life.
