To support the Big Issue Foundation I have signed up for its London-to-Paris Bike Ride 2011, and I’m looking for your support *! The ride will take place from 21 to 24 July, and I’ll be riding 230 miles in 3 days. With your money and my legs we can help to make a big change in someone’s life!
Homelessness is often a lonely, stressful and terrifying experience. Apart from not being able to enjoy the benefits that a fixed abode provides (e.g. washing facilities; 25% of rough sleepers say their health has deteriorated as a result), rough sleepers also encounter constant isolation, ostracisation and any number of threats on the street (e.g. 1 in 3 rough sleepers have been mugged). More than half say they have contemplated suicide **.
The Big Issue Foundation exists to try to change all that, not by giving them a hand-out once in a while, but by giving them a hand-up by employing them to sell “The Big Issue” newspaper. It works with more than 2,900 people across the UK** on a one-to-one basis, tackling issues ranging from health and accommodation through to money management and aspirations. It's is about taking control, moving forward, gaining independence and rebuilding lives, and enabling vendors to continue on their journey away from homelessness.
“Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Thank you very much!
The Big Issue Foundation
