Two Beards in a Boat for Babies - Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race · 16 April 2022
Bob Taylor and Martin Payne are two recently retired military veterans with a combined age of 115. After very successful and full military careers, to keep them out of mischief they are attempting to complete the legendary Devizes to Westminster ultra-marathon international canoe race. The Two Beards will be completing this race in a C2 open Canadian Canoe in one go - it is possible to attempt the race over four days...but not for Two Beards in a Boat!
The race is contested over 125 miles, starting in Devizes, firstly on the Kennet and Avon Canal, before moving onto the Thames and making their weary way towards Westminster. The race is gruelling, and includes 77 different portages, not to mention that half of the race will be completed in the dark!
Bob and Martin are raising money for the Fertility Foundation, a charity which helps individuals and couples who are struggling to afford treatment for IVF. With the NHS funding cuts showing no signs of stopping, the Fertility Foundation has provided Bob's daughter and future son-in-law with funding to enable them to embark on their second round of IVF treatment - something which they couldn't have afforded by other means.
It is our hope that we can in some way give back to this charity, and to help other couples on their journey to parenthood...
