We provide life-saving treatment to men in suicidal crisis.

Story

Inspired by the mighty horse messenger system of Genghis Khan’s Mongol Empire, that connected half the planet on hooves, the Mongol Derby is the toughest horse race on earth. Through rebuilding the ancient empire’s trail network, the race spans across 1000km of Mongolian steppe, requiring participants to not only navigate and survive on their own wits and skill, but live among the herders.

My names Iona, I'm actually stepping in to ride for my brother Valentine who was originally going to ride back in 2019, but the race was pushed back due to covid. He is sadly unable to take part due to the strict weight restrictions which his 6ft 5" frame wouldn't allow. James' Place is a charity close to both our hearts in a time where we need to shine a light on the Suicide epidemic more than ever.

These are my brothers words...

My name is Valentine Hutley and this July I will be competing in the Mongolian Derby. The race is 1000km through the Mongolian wilderness on semi-wild horses. It's up to me to navigate and survive on my own wits and skill, living among the herders. Having spent time out in New Zealand surrounded by horses that I have been breaking in and training. I felt as though I wanted to push myself and take on this incredibly unique horse race.

From someone who has seen other people around him struggle with mental health, I feel as though I have become increasingly aware of the problem. I have been fortunate enough (so far) not to have struggled with my mental health, but one of the things that upsets me most is seeing people around me who I love suffer in silence. Male suicide is a world wide epidemic and biggest killer of young men. James's place is a phenomenal charity formed by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley after they tragically lost their son James to suicide. The charity works to provide safe spaces which aim to support and listen to men who would like to talk and share how they are feeling, with people who understand and care during their time of need. I want to raise £20,000 for this amazing charity in an effort to save lives and to give people happiness. A problem told is a problem halved! Thank you for donating

Our mission is to stop men dying by suicide and we believe death by suicide is preventable. Yet, in the UK suicide is still the single leading cause of death of men under 50. At James’ Place, we provide proven, professional therapy for men in suicidal crisis to help them find hope for the future.
