Did you know, 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime within the UK?
Dave/Rockape here! Much like Macmillan have their own dedicated "Game Heroes" pages setup for video game streamers and the like, the Welsh Gaming Network are dedicating their charity work this year to do something similar for Velindre Cancer Centre where I work my day job.
Who are the Welsh Gaming Network?
We are the biggest website dedicated to the games industry, gaming communities and esports in Wales with a large community full of games developers and others involved in the industry, the biggest collection of Welsh streamers and a vibrant community of gamers in general from all over Wales.
We help arrange or promote gaming related events across Wales, including Rapture Gaming Festival which was the biggest ever gaming specific event in Wales last year and Level Up Wales held at Wrexham Glyndwr University being the biggest event in North Wales, as well as supporting local grassroots level esports, gaming events, communities and businesses across the country.
We have also teamed up with Welsh Sports Association who can help us to bring esports awareness as a recreational and social activity to the sporting bodies in Wales, and to the Welsh Government.
What is Velindre Cancer Centre?
Velindre Cancer Centre provides specialist cancer services to over 1.5 million people in South East Wales and beyond. We are one of the largest cancer centres in the UK. Each year over 5,000 new referrals and around 50,000 new outpatient appointments are seen by us. We employ over 670 staff with many more volunteers.
Patients referred to Velindre Cancer Centre come under the care of Clinical and Medical Oncologists. Oncologists specialise in the non-surgical treatment of cancer. Velindre Cancer Centre is the main centre for these services, however we also provide outpatient clinics and other out-based chemotherapy services at other sites.
Patient numbers have risen in recent years as advances in cancer treatment and diagnosis continue to be made. This increase is reflected by the increased need for highly skilled and experienced staff. We play a significant role in educating and training health care professionals to meet these future demands. The cancer centre is host for the Clinical Oncology section of the University of Wales College of Medicine.
Why are we doing this?
Velindre and fundraising go hand in hand if you look to any community fundraising events across Wales, you will usually spot something being done for Velindre. This is because anyone in Wales who has been touched by cancer, maybe a family member or friend, would have needed services provided by Velindre. Either at the centre itself or at any of the outreach services provided. There are also wonderful breakthroughs in cancer treatment thanks to the countless worldwide trials which Velindre plays a major role in, and the support and care patients and their families receive is wonderful.

There are MANY patrons for Velindre Fundraising including sports stars, Welsh businesses and us regular folk. We wish to add to that, while showing the power behind using video games for fundraising much like bigger games companies do, where hundreds of millions of pounds are raised each year for various charities.
So what is the plan?
The Welsh Gaming Network is going to use this page going forward for any donations given at any of our events. Streamers and gaming enthusiasts (YOU READING THIS, COME SPEAK TO US!) are welcome to arrange events on our behalf, maybe you're looking to do a 24 hour streaming fundraising event for Velindre, we can help you by:
- Promote you on our website and social media
- Attend your event as a group (if in real life) or egg you on if it is online
- Provide you with tips on how to make a great gaming related charity event/stream
- Help to plan the fundraising itself I.E. we can help to provide T-shirts and collection forms
- Possibly bring volunteers if its a real life event
We will update this page regularly whenever somebody comes forward with their charity event, and we will also update the website, social media and Discord so everyone knows whats happening.
