Story

Thank you for visiting #vernetbells. Please note that fundraising is now complete. Many thanks to all who have contributed.

A ring of ten new bells for St George's Church, with a tenor weighing 261kg (5-0-15 in C) , was cast by John Taylor & Co of Loughborough and installed in April 2019. The bells were first rung for service on Palm Sunday. We are most of the way to our funding target, but fundraising continues. Please help if you can! We have begun teaching some local ringers, both French and British, and we look forward to welcoming many ringing visitors from the UK and beyond in the years to come. The bells were dedicated on 29th September 2019 by the Assistant Bishop of Europe, and the first peal was rung that day. The bells are available to visiting bands for peals, quarters and general ringing.

About the charity

We are a Mission-shaped diocese - a network of Christian communities and congregations serving Anglicans and other English-speaking Christians across an enormous geographical area.We minister in a myriad of situations, in most of which the Church of England has scarcely been heard of, questions of establishment scarcely arise, civic links may take a very different form, and denominational identity is often much less important than the language of worship. English churches and congregations have been established on the Continent since before the Reformation. The number of these grew to such an extent that in 1633 congregations of the Church of England in all foreign countries were placed under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of London. Anglican dioceses and then provinces were later formed in all parts of the world outside the United Kingdom. The Diocese in Europe is made up of churches and congregations spread across forty-two countries on three continents, and covering one sixth of the earth’s land surface. And yet, this is a Diocese of the Church of England.
