Niger is one of the the poorest countries in the world. Recent droughts, followed by floods, have devastated this year’s crops. Many of the men have moved to Nigeria to find work. The remaining women and children, more than half the population, have almost literally nothing to eat.
For one hour today, from 11am to 12, Wired magazine will be using Facebook, Twitter (@WiredUK), the Wired blog and email to create a flash-mob charity appeal. Our aim is raise £1,000 in 60 minutes for a desperately needy group of people.
The money will go straight to Care International UK's work on the frontline in Niger. And, along the way, we are hoping to prove that social media can be used to make a real difference to people who live a long way from the internet.

As you read this the clock will already be ticking. Please give what you can and pass the word around.
