Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Zakithi Buthelezi. This year I will be going for my first Comrades Marathon. I am raising funds for KHULA foundation, read more about them here https://www.khula-education.org/
I was fortunate enough to work at KHULA from January to December 2016.
The Foundation carries on the work of the late David Rattray, the famous South African entomologist and raconteur. The work it sets out to do is to help improve the standards of rural education in any way possible through certain donors and partnerships in the impoverished Umzinyathi region in which David lived.
Typically, this work will range from supplying a school with water and
sanitation, electricity, computers, extra classrooms and libraries to providing
teacher training, volunteer support, and more.
I learnt a lot about the state of South African education and even though there is still a lot to do, any positive changes that can be made, even incremental make a difference.
In such rural, isolated communities many challenges face the children at our schools. They travel vast distances to get to school, balance chores at home around school work and then struggle to complete homework by kerosene lamp or candle after dark. But despite all of this they show resilience.
It is quite evident that the children have the drive and ambition to go as far as their education can take them. They just need the opportunity, that spark… and that’s where you come in. You can make the difference.
I implore you to take a second to think how much a simple few Rands mean to to you and how you can do so much more for someone less fortunate than yourself.
I have run my qualifier and am on the way to being well primed for the 90km challenge on the 10th of June. There is still a long road to go and I will post regular updates on my exploits as I continue with a strict Comrades training regime.
