Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit the JustGiving page set up in memory of William Delves.

William Delves – former Regional Manager for Africa
and Western Europe at Scripture Gift Mission, loving husband of Susie Delves, father to Michael Delves, Laura Tuck and Samuel Delves and beloved son of Theo Delves who was
called home on 1 April 2017.

Him and Susie have been part of the Scripture Gift Mission family for many years. In fact, SGM played a part in their own story, as the place where they met and worked together. He is remembered very warmly by his colleagues at Scripture Gift Mission. He worked with SGM for more than 25 years. During that time, he served as Regional Manager for Africa, as well as (at various points) for Latin America, and for Western Europe. He was part of SGM during many changes, not least the
introduction of new computer systems and programmes. Will possessed a gift for being able simply to install a programme, read the manual, and understand immediately how to use it! More importantly, he could teach others how to work with it too – and therefore he supported the use of computer programmes throughout the design, and print process, at the heart of SGM’s literature ministry. Will supported the graphics team, helping with new fonts and creating special characters for the many languages in which SGM worked at the time –
some of them very much minority languages, in which little else had been published. He was a frequent representative of SGM in churches and exhibitions, and through ‘deputation’ work. To add to all of that, he also became responsible for distribution – overseeing print requests and distribution of Bible portions from all parts of the world.

His leadership, service, and versatility earned him a reputation as a ‘go-to person’ to whom people could turn whenever anything needed to be
done. His commitment to providing people with access to the Scriptures was exemplary. During his time with SGM, very many millions of Bible portions were given for free, to those who needed them. Many will trace their faith journey and their relationship with Christ to those Bible portions. And William played a crucial role – serving God faithfully throughout. Through his God-given gifts he helped to design, publish and distribute God´s Word in minority and major languages.

For those of us who didn’t work alongside William, we had the pleasure of spending time with both William and Susie when SGM Lifewords gathered with hundreds of friends and supporters in 2013, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Mission. Their joint attitude of service was underlined again, as they stayed with us for the several days of celebration and meetings, helping to facilitate our Latin American staff, and providing interpretation. It was a pleasure to receive them like old friends – even those of us who had not met them in person before –
because of our shared passion for the work of the Bible around the world. After the 125 event Will stayed involved as a volunteer (along with Susie), particularly helping with French translations, putting us in touch with native French speakers and offering invaluable advice.

May God continue to comfort William´s family in their grief, through the sharing of memories, and the kindness and love of friends. Until that day when there will be no more pain, or sadness, or tears – as all things are made new in Christ.

In Him,
