We fund specialist palliative care to support patients in our community

Story

Middle-aged man in lycra needs your money again please!

In Sept 2014 it was Jon Versus Dorset - 100 miles on a bike and 7000' of climbing, raising £200.  Having defeated one county, I'm taking on another.

In May 2015 it's Jon Versus Cumbria. My aim is to raise £1120 for Macmillan Caring Locally

Macmillan Caring Locally is a small local charity which supports the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital. The Macmillan Unit is a specialist palliative care ward built in 1974 and was the first of its kind in the country.

Although the charity has the Macmillan name, it is in fact an independent charity with no connection to the national organisation Macmillan Cancer Support.

Their funding supports 16 in-patient beds at the Macmillan Unit Christchurch, a 15 person Day Centre, 9 Macmillan Nurses who look after up to 350 patients living at home in our local community, and 3 Macmillan Nurses who support patients at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Every year there are more than 1,100 referrals to the Macmillan Unit.

Macmillan Caring Locally also funds the multi-disciplinary teams at the Macmillan Unit which include the Family Support Team, Rehabilitation Team, Complimentary Therapy, Welfare benefits advice and Chaplaincy. Macmillan Caring Locally is very proud that the Macmillan Unit is a ‘Centre of Excellence’; a standard achieved due to the dedication of their team of professionals and volunteers.

2014 was a special year for the charity as it was their 40th year of providing this care. However none of this would have been possible without the generous support of the local community.

You can find out more at http://www.macmillanlocal.org.

The Fred Whitton's a 112 mile bike ride  around the Lake District.  It's a properly tough route, one of the hardest one day rides in the UK, going over all the Lakeland passes, one with a 30% gradient and this comes at 98 miles.  The total climb is 10779 feet.  You can see the route at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3768661.

I'll be doing some training rides throughout the spring - watch me progress at http://www.strava.com/athletes/6161141
