Story
Myself (Nikitta) & Amy are joining Cancer Research UK's Race for Life this year. Neither of us are massive runners so this is going to be a massive challenge to get through so please give generously! However it will all be worth it as I will be running in memory of my step-mum who passed away from secondary breast cancer in October last year. She brought a little bit of sparkle to lives of everyone she met and fought the illness for 6 months with such bravery and very few people even knew she was unwell, so as much as she would hate all the attention what better way to honour her fight than to raise lots of money in her name to make sure in the future no family has to loose someone special. You can join the fight too by digging deep and sponsoring me - it's quick, easy and totally secure.
Not many people are aware of secondary cancer and neither were we until after we lost Gillian. She found out she had breast cancer for the second time in November 2013, she had a mesectomy and had chemotherapy treatment but by April we found out the cancer had spread to her bones and liver. She started chemotherapy straight away despite being very weak and ill and by the October she had her final session. We were all looking forward to getting back to normal and her getting back to her usual bubbly self however within a few weeks she was back in hospital extremely ill where the doctors told us there was nothing else they could do as the cancer was too far gone and had come back with such force once the chemotherapy had stopped, the next day she passed away. Secondary cancer is when it spreads from the original place to somewhere else in the body, most seconary cancers cannot be cured and there is currently no cure for secondary bone cancer, any treatment given is just used to control it.
You always hear about so many people being affected by cancer but you never think you are going to be one of them, myself included. Only 50% of people survive cancer, I had previous experiences of cancer in the family but still never thought the worst would happen to someone I was so close to. Any money raised is one step closer to finding a cure so that one day 100% of people beat this awful disease.
