Fundraising for The Welcome Organisation
Story
This year I am doing an appeal for the homeless & raising funds for the Welcome organisation in Belfast.
Appeals for the homeless can be a debatable subject, you hear of the stories about people begging on the streets making £200 a day then going back to their houses that night, money made thats prob not being spent on essentials but feeding their habits instead, this is why I tend not to hand out money on the street, there are organisations out there with proper support systems in place to help those in need
Homelessness is not just people living & begging on the streets, in fact there are only about 6/8 people, sometimes through choice, actually sleeping out rough in Belfast at any given time rather than seeking support or shelter, due to whatever complex reasons, addictions, mental health, we don’t know peoples stories.
But you can be homeless even if you have a roof over your head, for example staying with friends or family, staying in a hostel, night shelter, squatting, living in poor conditions that affect your health, with this comes a loss in the sense of belonging, roots, identity & a place of emotional well being which for many is a damaging & isolating experience.
There are about 15,000 homeless people and individuals in Northern Ireland, including the elderly, according to the Housing Executive.
Every year the welcome organisation assists around 13,000 individuals make their journey out of homelessness - they provide specialist support services, housing surgery, nursing & health surgeries, activity group & life skills, daily drop in & IT facilities to help keep people off the streets.
On Fri 20th & Sat 21st Oct I will be doing a sleep out & during the day dropping into the centre to experience 1st hand the facilities they offer & to meet, chat to some of the people benefiting from the organisation. As well as this I will be doing collections at different points throughout the month for unwanted household items such as those listed in the flyer below.
