Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My step father, my children's granddad and my mums' rock in life, Keith, has recently been diagnosed with cancer of the lower oesophagus and given an initial terminal prognosis of just 4 months to live. This was extended to 12 months with intensive chemotherapy and now, potentially, years if a very difficult operation in August is a success.
His treatment and support so far has all been made possible through the work paid for by the Above and Beyond charity at North Devon Hospital; with chemotherapy provided at a day unit there as well as counselling from the Fern Centre – his go-to support nurse in the moments when he feels like he just can't cope. This is invaluable in his cancer journey and has turned a terminal diagnosis into a potential cure. All of this is funded exclusively by donations.
Keith is just 62 years old and has so much of his life yet to live, for himself and his children and (many!) grandchildren, so it was understandably a huge blow to our whole family. My heart goes out to anyone affected by this hideous disease. I, like many others I’m sure, have felt totally powerless to help in any meaningful way.
So, as I was already signed up to run the St Albans half marathon (my first ever!), I have decided to put that to some good use and raise a bit of cash for Above and Beyond. I'm aiming for sub-two hours if I can possibly manage it. If I can raise £1000 it would be amazing – but I have less than a week to do it!
I know we are all busy and every one has their own problems and worries. I know times are hard. I know everyone is asking for something. But, it is in these times that people need each other the most and anything you give will be hugely appreciated and could really make such a difference to someone's life or end of life journey, as it has for Keith.
Many thanks, Paul.
