North Downs Way 100 · 5 August 2023

Over 150,000 of us in the UK have MS. It’s unpredictable and different for everyone. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We’re the MS Society. We understand what life’s like with MS. We're here for you through the highs, lows and everything in between. Together, we are strong enough to stop MS.

Story

On June 10th I took part in the South Downs Way 100 raising money for MS Society. A 100mile race with 12,500ft of elevation. Unfortunately the 33 degree heat got the better of me and many others and I had to withdraw half way through the race, feeling very frustrated and disappointed that I’d let a lot of people down, I’ve decided to go again, therefore, On August 5th I’ll be taking on The North Downs Way 100, 103 miles 11,400ft of elevation. Still the same fundraiser, just with a better outcome.

My amazing better half Hannah was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis MS 6 and a half years ago, this coupled with being a type 1 diabetic which she was diagnosed with at 4 years old, all this has lead to lots of medication, hospital trips, fatigue, nerve pain, hypos and the list goes on. There is no cure for both diabetes and MS, with the latter having the potential to cause massive issues with the nervous system leaving most with the disease with a shortened life span, needing use of walking aids and not having the ability to lead a normal life. Despite all this Hannah has attacked these conditions head on and doesn’t let it effect her day to day life, despite probably just wanting to stay curled up with the dog. Hannahs will power to just get on with life despite these challenges is inspiring, especially when you add on having to deal with me moaning about a calf niggle.

When I told Hannah I’d be taking on a 100 Mile race, I asked her to choose which charity she’d like me to raise money for, so I’ll be raising money for MS Society.
