Charlie Parkes is raising money for Speech and Language UK

Cardiff Half Marathon 2025 · 5 October 2025 ·

For at least 2 million children in the UK, learning to talk and understand words feels like an impossible hurdle. Your support can help give children and young people the skills they need so they aren't left behind, waiting to be understood.

Story

About

This October, I'm running the Cardiff half-marathon to raise awareness for the awesome Speech and Language UK charity! As a lifelong stammerer myself, I was drawn to the organisation for their high-quality support to young voices across the country, particularly to those unable to properly express and support themselves.

Speech and Language UK aids not only in stammer support for young people, but also helps in common, but misunderstood, issues such as social skills development. Growing up, I was incredibly lucky to have a supportive network around my speech impediment from family, friends and my school, which is something I think this charity can give to the thousands of other children suffering from similar speech or social issues.

Any funds raised from this event go directly to the charity, where they will be tremendously helpful in ensuring they can reach as many young lives as possible in the ultimate goal of giving every child a fair chance to understand and be understood.

From the fantastic organisation

"We are Speech and Language UK -- we want every child to face the future with confidence. 1.9 million children are estimated to be behind with their talking and understanding of words. Without the right help, this can destroy their world. They feel disconnected from their family. Unable to make friends. Unfairly punished for not following instructions they don't understand. What does the future hold for them?

We must reach children earlier to ensure every child has the skills to face the future. We're designing innovative tools and training for thousands of nursery staff and teachers. We're giving families the confidence and skills to help their child. And we're putting pressure on politicians to prioritise support for children.

Too many children are left waiting to be understood. Help us bring speech and language skills into the spotlight so they can all flourish."
