Sam's marathon for Teach a Child - Africa

Sam Sherburn is raising money for Teach a Child - Africa

Helsinki City Marathon · 16 May 2026

'Teach a Child - Africa' (TaC) is a voluntary charity working in Nyanza Province, Kenya, an area with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. We fund secondary education for orphaned children from poor families by paying school fees and providing uniforms and other essentials.

Story

Outside of my day job, I volunteer as a Trustee of Teach a Child Africa (TaC). TaC provides scholarships for secondary education to orphaned and vulnerable children in the Nyanza Province of Western Kenya, which was severely impacted by HIV/AIDS.

It's an organisation which makes a real differerence, and where a little goes a very long way. Since 2007, we have been able to fund over 220 students through their secondary education. Four in five of those who have graduated have met the requirements to go on to university.

We pay full boarding school fees (around £500 a year) which covers education, uniform, accommodation and food and a small pocket money allowance (around £30 a year) to support students buy extra books and toiletries.

TaC volunteers in Kenya (many of whom are are current and former teachers) make all of our operational decisions and mean our operational expenses are very low.

I first came to be involved in TaC as a volunteer just after I graduated in 2017. I've been a monthly donor ever since, a member of the UK Board since 2019 and its Chair since 2021.

In just under two weeks, I'll be pushing through my first marathon. Any donation, however big or small, towards TaC would be greatly appreciated!
