About The SPFL Trust

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) Trust is a registered charity that works through a network of SPFL-associated charitable trusts (ATC’s) to improve lives and reduce the impact of poverty in communities across Scotland. As a public health-focused organisation, the Trust recognises the negative link between deprivation, happiness, health, and opportunity, and believes that there is untapped potential across the SPFL network and beyond to reduce the impact of poverty in our communities.

The Trust understands that the impact of poverty is vast and complex, which is why it works with different age groups, prioritising work that seeks to lessen that impact in two interrelated areas in which it already has particular strengths:

• health and well-being (physical and mental)

• attainment (education and employability)

By using their strengths, learning from others, and engaging with key strategic partners, The Trust work collectively to improve the lives of people across Scotland. Poverty affects nearly one in five people in Scotland, and that number is on the increase. Poverty can have devastating effects on mental health, employment, education, and increase the risk of suicide.

Almost one in five people live in poverty in Scotland. For children it is worse at one in four and is predicted to reach 29% in 2024. That’s significant, not least because those living in poverty are more likely to have poorer mental health, go to prison, face barriers to education and employment, have experience of trauma and abuse, and have a three-fold risk of suicide.

Living in poverty means fewer chances and opportunities in life. The SPFL Trust’s recent research revealed that people living near an SPFL club are even more likely to experience poverty. In fact, those living within 10 miles of an SPFL ground are three times more likely to experience poverty than people living further away.

Football clubs are local institutions, anchors in their communities, which leave generational imprints on people across Scotland. The SPFL Trust believe in using the power of football for good; to get to and inspire change in the heart of communities in a way that others can’t. The Trust supports communities the length and breadth of the country reaching 84% of Scotland.
