Team Thomas's fundraiser for Societi, The UK Foundation for Kawasaki Disease

Marie Boneham is raising money for Societi, The UK Foundation for Kawasaki Disease

10km run, walk or cycle · 27 April 2025

Kawasaki disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in the UK and the western world. It's time we changed that. We have an enormous task to do. But we are going to do it. TOGETHER we will. Join us and help us protect tiny hearts. You can make a difference. Awareness of this often pernicious disease is currently poor. Slow diagnosis and delayed treatment of Kawasaki Disease can cause serious, life-long health issues. Children affected by Kawasaki Disease have excellent chances of a good recovery with timely diagnosis and the correct treatment. At Societi we know that recognising Kawasaki Disease early is THE transformational opportunity to prevent what can be devastating effects from Kawasaki Disease. Kawasaki Disease has lots of symptoms in common with other childhood illnesses so it is often misdiagnosed - this means lifelong heart damage for too many children. Each year in the UK there are more cases of Kawasaki Disease than bacterial meningitis! Everyone would spot meningitis and know what to do, because of brilliant awareness raising work by MRT. We need everyone to recognise Kawasaki Disease too.

Story

We turned Swansea red, then Padova… and now, the world!

I'm incredibly lucky to have such wonderful, supportive friends and family. That’s why I thought it would be amazing to launch an initiative where anyone, anywhere in the world, can join a 10km activity, share a photo, and contribute a €10 donation.

Here’s my motivation - Even when life gets hectic, I never forget how lucky I am to have had my happy ending. Back in October 2017, Thomas suddenly became seriously ill. At first, it looked like the flu but with some unusual symptoms. After six days, including a GP visit, blood tests, and an overnight stay in a small hospital, he was diagnosed with an infection and given antibiotics. Just 24 hours later, we were at a larger hospital, where he was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease. Because of the delayed diagnosis, his condition deteriorated quickly and he was placed on life support, fighting for his life. Five weeks later, our previously healthy five-year-old finally came home but with an aneurysm.

If I had known then what I know now, I would have asked if the doctors had considered Kawasaki disease. He had five of the classic symptoms. It’s a common condition becoming even more so and yet many parents still haven’t heard of it. If raising awareness can prevent even one other family from going through what we did, then it’s all worth it. Early diagnosis is everything. There’s no specific test for Kawasaki disease, and we still don’t know exactly how it spreads—so it all depends on people recognising the signs.

Let’s move for awareness, for families, and for early diagnosis. Wherever you are, join us for a 10km walk, run or cycle, post a picture, and donate €10.

Together, we can make a difference.
