Team SEA LIFE Blackpool will be taking part in the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge: to complete the grueling 24 mile walk in under 12 hours.
The Cause:
We love our oceans and we want to see them protected, now and for the future. So we are holding a “Cross the Oceans” Challenge supporting global marine conservation charity the SEA LIFE Trust!
Cross the Oceans is a distance event to replicate the Loggerhead Turtles return journey across the Pacific Ocean. The Sunshine Coast is one of the chosen nesting beaches for the Loggerhead Turtle, A local species that has been listed as endangered since
2015 and did you know only 1 in 1000 turtle hatchlings will survive to
adulthood? They need all the help they can get.
Once loggerheads hatch from their nest they ride the East Australian Current and enter ‘the Lost Years’ where they tackle the trials and tribulations across the Pacific Ocean
to the opposite side of the world, Chile and Peru. Sixteen years later they
will travel back across the Pacific Ocean. Once reaching maturity, around the
age of thirty, females return to the beach they were born to lay eggs which
will become the next generation.
This journey requires them to travel over 23,000km. (Roughly 14,292 Miles!) So that is the distance
we will be travelling to save our turtles, raising money and smiles
all the way!
Please support us in our goal and donate today!
