Story
I started coming to Wintercomfort for the homeless when I was 18.
Today I am 32, I was street homeless for many years and struggled with addiction, I didn’t feel that I belonged in society I was alone and vulnerable. I started using a day centre called Wintercomfort for the homeless, here I received support to wash, get food and take part in educational activities.
At Wintercomfort I met a life coach who supported me to regain motivation and begin making a healthy life for myself.
Following this I lived in the hostels in Cambridge city and soon after got a job in construction. I completed an apprenticeship in adult social care this was hard for me as I could not read or write well at this time.
I got lessons from a English teacher at Wintercomfort and some support from Cambridge Regional College. On completion of my apprenticeship I passed and was awarded apprentice of the year, this was such a great achievement for me as I was always told and felt I was stupid.
I then went to work in a Cambridge hostel as a Project Assistant. I did that for a year whilst applying for a job at Wintercomfort. It took me quite a few attempts to secure a role but I made it in the end and have worked here for over five years. My role is Sports Activity Support Work helping other homeless people to become motivated and engaged in sport, I have a lovely girlfriend and our own flat.
I want to raise some money to help homeless vulnerable adults who are just like me. So I’m running the Cambridge half marathon on 3rdMarch. I am untrained but if I put my mind to it I will do it. Please help me to raise money to help the homeless.
