Story

Hello! Here goes...

I haven't been a fit person for a few years. Just over a week ago, after weeks of too much lockdown food I thought it was time to get off my arse!

I'm slowly building up doing walk/runs and I'd like to be able to run 2.6 miles none stop by the 26th May (3.1 miles or 5K by 31st May if poss!). It's not a huge distance but to do it in a month will be a challenge. If everyone who reads this gives just £2.60 then I should be able to raise a few quid (but if you can afford more that's cool too!).

Changes UK are a charity I've been involved with in one way or another for many years and I'm always inspired by the service users, my colleagues within Changes and what they achieve.

Save the UK's Charities General fundraising has been hit very hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of fundraising events have been cancelled and many charities, particularly smaller ones, are struggling to maintain services because of this huge reduction in income. This impacts all sectors of society from children to the elderly as well as the vital work in areas such as palliative care, serious diseases, mental health, housing support, food supplies and countless others that charities support.

We understand that abstaining from drugs and alcohol is just the beginning of building a new life free from addiction; therefore Changes provides services that support the whole recovery journey - from dependence to independence. We provide a detox service, community based rehabilitation, supported and move on housing and opportunities to gain accredited qualifications, volunteering and work experience. Service users at the beginning of their recovery journey are supported 24 hours a day by qualified staff and our specially trained volunteer peer mentors. They also have access to our Recovery Academy which, over an eight week full time course, begins to build the knowledge and skills that service users need in order to maintain their recovery, build a personal recovery support network (including mutual aid groups) and learn to live life to the full. Changes staff and volunteers are passionate people - we all consider it a privilege to work with people in recovery - and we know that we can help those looking for a new life beyond drugs and alcohol.
