Story
A random conversation with my mate Tom at work about a book called The Horse Boy (Rupert Isaacson), where he told me about his mums charity (Circles Network) and the work they do through Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) sessions (Taking the Reins) inspired me to want to raise money for this charity. So I've roped in my team and our friends and family to participate in the 10k to raise some money for this worthy cause.
The Horse Boy is a true story of a families despair at their autistic son Rowans growing isolation and how an eerie connection with an old horse called Betsy started them on a journey that opened up Rowans world forever.
Taking the Reins uses EFL sessions to improve the lives of disabled and disadvantaged children through a fusion of fun, education and therapy. The children and young people learn a huge amount about their personal development, communication, respect, trust and relationships through the ways of the horse. The project encourages children who often have low self esteem and self confidence to achieve results and enjoy their time being in the presence and working with such a powerful animal.
The majority of participants range between the ages of 6-17 years old. A large percentage of children and young people visiting Taking the Reins experience autism and behavioural difficulties and often respond very well to the informal and inclusive environment provided. The trained facilitators encourage children to be expressive, confident, passionate and most of all happy.
