Story
Help us ease the strain during the COVID-19 outbreak. Our dedicated St John Ambulance volunteers are giving their time for free to help relieve the pressure on our NHS by boosting the health response in communities across the country by providing volunteers:
- To Emergency Departments across the NHS;
- At the Nightingale Hospitals working alongside the NHS, Army and other volunteers;
- in ambulances to support NHS Ambulance Trusts during the biggest ever sustained demand for their services;
- in many administrative and logistics roles to support those volunteers on the frontline.
The last time such a high and sustained level of support was provided to the nation was during World War One and Two.
When this is over, and it will be, St John Ambulance volunteers will be ready to go back into their communities to provide first aid at fetes, fayres, rugby matches, and many other community events as well as other celebrations once the lock down is over.
Due to the lockdown the main income for St John Ambulance, providing first aid courses and event cover, has been significantly reduced. The CEO, Martin Houghton-Brown, in his evidence to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee said that the Charity requires £450,000 every week and on current finances could only last until August without taking on high interest loans which would have a knock on effect to the services it could provide for the future.
UPDATE OCTOBER 2020:
St John Ambulance is continuing to support the NHS respond to the Covid-19 pandemic with volunteers in hospitals and crewing ambulances responding to 999 calls.
The charity is facing a significant financial shortfall this year which is expected to be around £15million and £5million next year.
Our Unit Manager is therefore, running the virtual London Marathon around Orpington on Sunday 4 October.
Any donations will help St John Ambulance and its volunteers continue to support the NHS and their communities.
Help us support the NHS and save lives. Every penny counts!
