In May 2020, after a healthy and happy three months, our
precious baby Toby became suddenly unwell. Following a week on the Paediatric
Intensive Care Unit at the John Radcliffe hospital, we made the decision to
move Toby to Helen and Douglas House on 9^th May for end of life care.
Toby spent five weeks in their care before he died peacefully on 13^th
June 2020.

Four weeks after being admitted to hospital, Toby was
diagnosed with an incredibly rare, recessive genetic condition called Isolated
Sulphite Oxidase Deficiency. This condition meant that his body could not fully
break down the sulphites it created. What was left over eventually became toxic
to his brain, resulting in several metabolic strokes and seizures.

Helen and Douglas House played an incredibly important role
in Toby’s care, as well as providing support for us a family. For the five
weeks Toby was there, they took full responsibility for his medical care,
including training us so that we could bring him home for a few hours. During
our time there, we were able to become active parents again, which is something
that we had not thought possible during our time in hospital. We have many
happy memories at Helen and Douglas House and will be eternally grateful to the
team there for making a truly devastating time a little easier.

It is because of the fantastic work they do that we aim to initially
raise £2000 so that other families can continue to benefit from their support
in the future.

Toby’s death has broken our hearts, but we hope to continue
his legacy and bring some good out of a devastating situation. Helen and Douglas
House run mainly on donations and provide priceless support for families and
children with severe, life limiting conditions.
