Story

Thank you for visiting our JustGiving page. This page is for one-off donations for Limb Reconstruction Units provided by Medical Aid for Palestinians.

What are we doing?

First-off... we're baaaack! I know we ask you guys to keep giving and honestly we are so, so grateful. Your donations really make a difference for all the causes we raise money for.

We now running in 4 events this year (all self-funded). Participants fundraising for these events and running the race are listed alongside:

Saturday April 9th 2016: Spartan Sprint - 7k, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London (Moe Khankhara and Haseeb Khan)

Saturday April 16th 2016: Dirty Dozen - 12k, Hole Park Estate, Kent (Moe Khankhara and Haseeb Khan)

Sunday September 25th 2016, Tough Mudder - 19k, Holmbush Farm, West Sussex (Moe Khankhara and Nadeem Bashir)

Saturday October 1st 2016, Spartan Sprint - 5-7k, Windsor Great Park, Windsor (Moe Khankhara, Firoz Rana, Amer Salim)

The events themselves are very grueling but the basic premise is: miles and miles of running broken up with military-style obstacles, which will test our grit, determination, teamwork as well as physical and mental strength. Often times, the sadistic organisers of these races take immense pleasure by throwing curveballs such as increasing the distance, greasing the walls, introducing new and tougher obstacles with no notice, so every event is guaranteed to be different from the last, and really test our physical strength and mental fortitude.

Why are we doing this?

Where previously we have raised money for the work of a charity in a general area, we are working with Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) again to specifically raise money for Limb Reconstruction Units they are building for the children of Gaza.

MAP is sending small teams of leading NHS consultant surgeons on short missions to Gaza, where they work in partnership with Palestinian doctors to provide specialist care.

We will never forget the tragic events of the summer of 2014, when Gaza was relentlessly attacked leaving thousands dead and many more injured, they need our support more than ever not only for basic necessities such as food and clothing but also for medical aid. Many of the hospitals looking after the critically ill are desperately in need of medical experts or life-saving equipment and medicine. Children like Hassan  and Khalid, who have survived terror you and I can only imagine and now face the prospect of living a drastically changed life. Meanwhile children all over Gaza are at risk from death or serious injury from unexploded shells lying in the rubble-strewn streets.

We are not physically 'Tough' people but in training for these races, we hope to become stronger people physically and mentally, and your donations will be the spark that ignites our motivation to see this through. As some of you know, we completed the National Three Peaks Challenge in 2014, Haseeb completed a Tough Mudder in May 2015 and we both completed a Tough Mudder in September 2015. The training for this event will continue to be grueling: sacrificing sleep for 3-5 mile runs and a 4-6 day a week training regime, not to mention the nutrition plan and our own personal home, family, work and social commitments.

What can you do to help?

Medical Aid for Palestinians, a UK registered charity, are helping to send UK medical experts to Gaza every month, to treat patients and train local staff.

This partnership is saving lives, but the funds for this project will run out without your help. If the funding isn’t there, their work cannot continue. It really is that simple. Hassan and Khalid’s doctors are determined to do everything they can for them.

The coming year will be a critical one for Hassan, Khalid and for many patients in Gaza. There are still so many injured people like them in need of specialist treatment. It is clear that Medical Aid for Palestinians will have a huge role to play, but they will need your help to stay the course.

Hospitals in Gaza urgently need orthopaedic surgeons to rebuild devastated limbs, plastic surgeons to help people recover from surgery and emergency care specialists to work with trauma cases.

If the project funding continues with your help, these and other medical experts will be visiting Gaza every month. They will spend time on the wards and operating rooms working with the local surgeons to decide what can be done to reconstruct the limbs of each patient.

The end goal of this project is to build the capacity of Gaza hospitals to give the highest standard of surgical care.

Who are MAP?

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees.

MAP delivers health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation and displacement.

Working in partnership with local health providers and hospitals, MAP addresses a wide range of health issues and challenges faced by the Palestinian people.

With offices located in Beirut, Ramallah, Jerusalem and Gaza City, MAP responds rapidly in times of crisis, and works directly with communities on longer term health development.

Medical Aid for Palestinians wouldn’t be able to do the work they do without your donations. Every year thousands of people show their support by getting involved with Medical Aid for Palestinians. Their website is here: http://www.map-uk.org.

Please spare what you can by clicking Donate. Any and all donations are welcome!
