South Downs Way 100 mile Group Challenge

Each year the Society's President nominates a charity of their choice for the Annual Charity Appeal, and this provides a national focus for the fundraising efforts of our members and complements the many local charities that our branches support.

Story

The Hants & Sussex and Southern Home Counties Areas are walking the South Downs Way to raise funds for Youth Sport Trust. The two Foresters Areas and 16 Foresters Branches run along, or slightly above or below the South Downs.

From Winchester in the West, to Eastbourne in the East, we will be walking a combined total of 100 miles over a six week period, from 25th May – 5th July 2024.

Youth Sport Trust empower young people and equip educators to transform lives through sport and play to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

There is a crisis in young people's wellbeing, with rising numbers reporting symptoms of anxiety and depression, alongside a decline in levels of physical activity.

- One in four year six pupils are obese. 2.4 million young people are active for less than 30 minutes per day

- 53% of young people believe their social wellbeing has suffered since the Covid pandemic

- 83% of UK parents believe children are spending too much time online and not enough time with each other

- Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to access and understand the benefits of sport and play

We are fundraising to support the vital work being delivered to help to reclaim play and sport in children's lives. Together we can build a brighter future where every child enjoys the life-changing benefits of play and sport.
