Story

Low-income individuals and families have sent nearly 250,000 questions to ABA Free Legal Answers for civil legal help with child and family issues, housing, consumer rights, veterans benefits, and much more.

When the COVID-19 pandemic upended daily life, tens of thousands of individuals sought help with legal issues related to evictions, lost jobs, insurance claims, and obtaining government benefits needed to survive. Many still need help on legal questions related to the pandemic and more recent crises. When wildfires, heat waves, storms, or earthquakes hit, nearly 11,000 volunteer attorneys are standing by on ABA Free Legal Answers to answer questions so survivors can get the resources needed for recovery.

My response was timely and well written and helped me understand my situation a lot more. The attorney was clear and concise with the answer they provided and I am very grateful for the help. I have no way to afford an attorney and have to represent myself so I am trying to figure out what rights I have and this site helped me understand those rights. - ABA FLA Client from Mississippi, August 2022

This summer the Legal Services Corporation reported that 92% of civil legal needs reported by low-income Americans received insufficient or no help. Cost is most often the barrier - nearly half of those who did not seek legal help cite concerns about cost as a reason. ABA Free Legal Answers decreases this justice gap.

Donor generosity is instrumental to keeping this free service available for those needing legal assistance.

"[This website] is one of my favorite all-time venues for pro bono service. The online format makes it easy to flexibly incorporate pro bono into my daily routine. I hope that this website can be sustained for the long run, as it delivers actual, cognizable value to real people." - ABA FLA North Carolina Volunteer Attorney, June 2022
