When detected early, breast cancer survival rates can be as high as 90%, but for women living in low-income countries, lack of access to regular screenings results in more late-stage diagnoses and worse outcomes. The BBF Breast Cancer Fund was created to address these inequities in care.
In 2022, donations to the fund were able to help more than 80 women in Honduras access and pay for treatment, including 16 surgeries and hundreds of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. In 2022, BBF also made a donation to St Lukes Montefiore Hospital System in New York. In 2023, BBF is expanding the program with a new partnership to increase access to radiology and imaging services.
The initiative was developed by Laura Kelly, BBF Vice President of Communications and Development, following her own diagnosis of breast cancer in the fall of 2021. After undergoing treatment, she is now cancer-free.
