Story
For over 10 years, Bianca experienced physical, emotional, financial, and sexual abuse by her husband. Along with declining self-esteem, the abuse led to adverse health outcomes: migraines, weight loss, anxiety. Because Bianca was isolated from her family and friends, she felt embarrassed to reach out since she had not been responsive to messages from them for over a year.
But finally, after being referred to CAWC from a health care provider at Stroger Hospital, Bianca called her sister, who was happy to hear from her and to provide support. Bianca moved into her sisters home and felt that was a big step towards recovery and seeking safety.
Bianca continued to receive counseling services through the Hospital Crisis Intervention Project (HCIP) for several years. HCIP has been a supportive base to cope with trauma endured from the domestic violence and a source for legal resources, and support through her immigration status.
CAWCs direct client assistance program was able to support Bianca with her legal fees, and after 10 years of marriage, Bianca was able to successfully divorce her abuser to begin a new life.
