Story
Since 1963, Carteret Community College has served Carteret County well. In recent years our campus has fallen behind. As we continue to upgrade our current buildings and add new buildings, we want to add an Educational Nature Trail that will circle our campus and invite public use and enjoyment of our beautiful location.
The trail will provide a safe place for our community to exercise, walk or bike, encouraging a healthier lifestyle. Landscaping around the trail will incorporate rain gardens and educational kiosks and signage providing information on program activities in the Aquaculture Technology Program, Horticulture Technology Program, and others. The trail will have designated areas for fishing and launching points for kayaks and paddleboards.
In addition to the habitat and water quality functions provided by the restored and stabilized shoreline, the site will provide an opportunity for the demonstration of an alternative shoreline stabilization technique. This demonstration is a valuable tool in educating property owners, regulatory agencies, legislators and other decision-makers about the benefits of efficacy of living shorelines in coastal North Carolina.
