Globally, nearly half of our waste (trash) is organic, usually food and yard waste. This waste not only takes up landfill space but also releases methane gas. GCS has an opportunity to do our part to reduce organic waste by instituting a composting program in the Upper School. New, clearly labeled trash, recycling, and composting receptacles will make this possible
This project was started in 2022 as part of the first round of Dragons Choose, and we are continuing it in 2023 so it can be fully funded.
In spring 2022, William Mantzaris '22, with the support of Mr. Weeks, the Upper School administration, and the Community Service club, completed an audit of trash receptacles in the Upper School Gould Building, and recommended locations and quantities for new receptacles. The goal is for the cafeteria area to receive new, dedicated receptacles for trash, recycling, and composting, while the rest of the building will have new containers for trash and recycling. The new receptacles will be clearly labeled for ease of use.
