My name is Adam Wisco, I'm a class of 2022.5 Computer Science major and I also play on the hockey team here at Middlebury. In high school, I put my mattress on the floor and stacked pillows beside my bed in my dorm room - I was already fed up with the small twin size bed they gave me. When I came to Middlebury, I dealt with the crappy bed up until one late night in March I was up chatting with my suitemates, and someone threw out the idea of making the beds at school bigger. From there, I spent hours every day trying to figure out how to make that happen. After a lot of prototyping, by April I was sleeping on the first ever Biggabed made from 3D printed plastic hooks, broken hockey sticks, and our initial version of the foam mattress extension.
At some point along that process, I began researching the viability of turning it into a business. After forming Bigg A Bed LLC over the summer following my freshmen year, Biggabed opened for business for the 2019-2020 academic year, during which we rented about 80 beds. Nearly four years later and we've rented just under 1000 beds across our six locations. The Biggabed team currently includes 11 people across our six locations including Sophia Merageas 24, Jake Oblak 25, Matt Myers 25, and Paul Fine-Lease 25, who are the current Campus Directors for Middlebury.
We are constantly working to improve our product, and we've made many improvements since those initial prototypes. Recently, the focus has been on expanding to more schools. Given the structure of the company, there are many startup costs associated with expanding to new locations, especially building up our inventory. We have the operational capability to expand to many more schools, but at this point we're held up by the high startup costs. At the moment, we're relying on income from our already established schools, which are currently still in the growth stages. Access to startup capital will drastically improve our ability to expand to more schools, and improving our marketing capabilities will lead to quicker profitability at new locations, allowing us to grow even faster.
Alongside our MiddSTART campaign, we are separately looking for more capital through a business loan. If you would be interested in hearing more about this opportunity, please reach out to us at contact@biggabed.com and we would be happy to share more information, including a more complete business plan and our current financial situation.
