Story

Founded in 2021, Middlebury Formula Hybrid gives students hands-on learning opportunities in a wide range of engineering fields. The team plans to compete in the 2023 Formula Hybrid competition, a multi-discipline competition hosted by Dartmouth College held in May at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Teams from around the country will bring their cars to compete in events such as acceleration (drag race), autocross (short race testing maneuverability), endurance (44km race where cars can reach over 100mph), along with static events in design and project management.

What we accomplished last year

Last year, Middlebury Formula Hybrid competed in the 2022 Formula Hybrid Competition after only our first year of work on the car which is rare for most teams. We made tremendous progress as the only non-engineering school in the competition. Most notably, we finished the year with a running combustion engine, a fully redesigned low voltage wiring harness, a completed drivetrain system, and a functioning suspension system. We passed all of our mechanical and safety inspections as well as our low voltage and fluid spill/suspension. These achievements were a testament to the hard work, focus, and learning that occurred in just our first year. For more details on last year's projects please visit our website.

What we're working on this year

This year we are picking up where we left off and have already made great progress toward driving our race car. Jordan and Josef on the Electrical Team are reassembling the low voltage wiring harness and installing it in the car. Dan, leading the Combustion Team, is testing our KTM 250 dirt bike engine outside of the car to make sure it is running properly. Ahmed, leading the Brakes Team, is researching and testing our braking system. Recently, we completed a rolling brakes test in which all four wheels successfully locked up (check out the video on our Instagram @middformulahybrid). Dane is working to get the accumulator (battery pack) in the car. Rohan is using our new mill to make improvements to our engine mount. Brittney is managing our social media and student outreach. Neehal is designing and fabricating our impact attenuator crash system for the car. As a team, we are planning to take another welding course this J-term to build off of the course from last year.

Our current goal

Our goal for the year is to get our car running safely and efficiently to drive it at the competition. To make this happen, we are hoping to fundraise $10,000 for car parts, new tools, safety equipment, educational training and transportation to the New Hampshire Motor Speedway this May.
