Story

A Sense of Home is a homeless prevention nonprofit creating homes for young people aging out of foster care. 85% of those we serve are young women and 65% have children of their own. 50% of those struggling with homelessness were once in foster care.

The children of young mothers who have aged-out of foster care are among the most disenfranchised children in America. These children are the most likely to end up in the foster care system. Our mission is to create safe and secure environments to aid in ending that cycle and nurturing a bright new future for both the mothers and their children.

ASOH partners with LA County and DCFS to advance Permanent Supportive Housing. ASOH assists former foster youth in securing vouchers for housing. Once housed, ASOH ensures aged out foster youth as well as their first homes are set up to ensure sustainability and improved outcomes. Once TAY youth receive the keys to their apartment, ASOH turns their empty space into a home. ASOH connects TAY youth to additional services within our expansive Resource Network and supports them in onboarding to these programs. Resource Network opportunities include financial literacy training, educational scholarships, therapy, trauma informed healing, referrals for job placement and job training.

ASOH welcomes recipients to pay it forward in supporting their peers in having their homes created. The Pay it Forward Alumna (PIFA) Community enjoy special events to gather to receive custom gifts and wishes, additional resources and most importantly connection to community.

Please donate today and help us reach our goal of $50k as we work towards creating 25 inspired homes for young mothers and their children just in time for Mother's Day. Your generous contribution will ensure these kids thrive at home, excel in school, and become empowered to build healthy relationships. Likewise, their mothers will excel in work, study and parenting.

Being in foster care and a single parent, I had no one to help me furnish my first apartment or have the ability for it to feel like a safe place for me and my son. I can never forget the look on my son's face when he looked into his room for the first time. Savannah, Home Created 2017
