Story
Hinson Art Museum would like to bring the official Crayola artist, Herb Williams, to campus in Fall 2021 and purchase one of his incredible crayon sculptures, named The Ripple Effect, to display in the museum.
Using Crayola crayons exclusively, Herb Williams creates original sculptures that may require hundreds, even thousands of crayons. His artwork holds world records with Ripley's and Guinness. His sculptures have been placed in childrens hospitals, corporate lobbies, museum walls, and the White House. He received a B.F.A. in sculpture from Birmingham-Southern College, and apprenticed under two professional sculptors. Upon graduation he immediately went to work at a bronze foundry in West Palm Beach, FL. Then, in 1998 Williams moved to Nashville. He received The Joan Mitchell Foundation Museum Purchase Grant, the Next Star Artist Award, and was sponsored by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2011. In addition to recently receiving the commission for the new wing of the Atlanta airport, Williams is also the official Crayola artist.
The Ripple Effect took Williams over four months to create and 40,000 crayons were used for the deer alone. With your support, we will be able to invite Mr. Williams to Wingate's campus to present the piece and share more about his work. Art plays an important role in shaping the future of our students, and more than 350 Wingate University students take art classes each semester. Access to this kind of art and the opportunity to interact with artists and exhibits like these is truly invaluable. Thank you for your support of the Art Department at Wingate!
