Story

The Litigation Section's Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP)

JIOP provides diverse law students summer internships with a state or federal judge in 12 cities. JIOP accepts applications from students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. For the past 21 years, JIOP has been promoting quality in legal education, equal access to justice, a better understanding of the law, and improvements in our justice system.

Together, these JIOP leaders have given $11,000 and are asking you to help match that amount with your generous gift:

Loren Kieve, Angela Elbert, Laurence and Kelli Pulgram, Beth Kaufman, Jack Londen, Anne Marie Seibel, Dan Dowd, The Hon. Lorna Schofield, The Hon. Therese Stewart and Carole Scagnetti Charitable Trust, Cristina Henriquez, and Jessica Ortiz.

For someone whose understanding of how a courtroom operated was based entirely on what I viewed on television, JIOP was an eye-opening experience. The opportunity to extern for a federal judge inspired and informed the kind of lawyer I wanted to be - a litigator who would uphold the highest standards of professional conduct and excellence. -Alexander Giraldo, JIOP 2015

In 2021, 164 students from 73 law schools interned with 124 judges across the country.

JIOP is a catalyst for diverse young professionals, setting them on a career path prepared by professional hands-on experience in the courts, armed with effective writing skills and possessing valuable insight into our judicial system. Join with JIOP to foster a judiciary that reflects the society it serves; thus, engendering fairness and adherence to the rule of law.
