Help position new Hamline Students for a successful college experience
Power of One Day 2019 · 6 November 2019 ·
Pathways to Hamline is an optional pre-orientation opportunity for incoming first-year students that provides an additional opportunity to develop skills and learn about the Hamline experience. The program allows students to connect with others and develop skills to help with success throughout their time at Hamline. Focusing on areas such as civic engagement and service, education and exploration in diversity, leadership development and staying healthy through college these pathways help incoming Hamline students explore what opportunities are available to them and start their Hamline experience with a strong support network.
The "Do All the Good" Pathway has been incredibly beneficial in connecting me to the Hamline community. I do not know if I would have been as involved as I am, especially in my work with the Wesley Center, had I not been introduced to its programming and work that it does in such an immersive way. The work that we did in the program helped to influence the social justice-oriented work that I have been involved in at Hamline, specifically my involvement in food access initiatives, Feed Your Brain, McVay, and being a student leader in Residential Life. Pathways helped me to further understand what an inclusive, accessible community should look like--especially in our education about various faiths, but also about our engagement with different community partners. ~ Maggie Bruns, 2017 Do All the Good Pathway
Gifts to support Pathways to Hamline help ensure that it remains completely free to participating students. Additionally, if enough funds are received, the program may be expanded:
$1,000 would allow for a high impact reunion activity that addresses continued student learning, student experiences related to adjustment, acclimation and persistence as well as retention issues
$2,000 would allow us to bring in external experts to present engaging, cutting-edge information relative to the current four Pathways (e.g., wellness; diversity and inclusion; leadership; community-based social justice learning).
$3,000 would allow for the creation of a new Pathway for 20 students (e.g., $150/meal). This Pathway could be focused on career development or another area of staff/student interest.
After completing the 2019 Pathway program, 100% of the participants reported: (a) strong sense of belonging to the university community; (b) confidence in ability to strong connections with other students, staff and faculty; (c) ability to advocate of own needs and needs of others; (d) ability to access available university resources: (e) feel prepared to begin college experience at Hamline.
