As one of the original faculty members at Carthage's Kenosha Campus, Professor Clayton Diskerud '59 taught and directed a variety of academic programs for 36 years. During that time and long before mechanisms were established to support underrepresented students, Clayton championed inclusive education. Given a blanket invitation, Black students of that era regularly visited him and his wife at their home. Gaining their trust as an informal sounding board, Prof. Diskerud later advised the Black Student Union at Carthage.
"He was able to have a frank and sincere conversation about race without getting defensive," said Alan Mills '79, a Carthage trustee whose lifelong friendship with the professor stemmed from his time as a student.
This Giving Tuesday we ask that you honor his memory by making a gift to the Wiggan-Kenniebrew Endowed Scholarship Fund. This fund provides scholarships for multicultural students who demonstrate a commitment to the African American community through membership in a student group that builds community and awareness around African American identity. With your help, we can continue Prof. Diskerud's legacy of supporting Carthage students of color.
