In Alabama, an estimated 30,830 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2021. It is estimated that there will be 4,460 new breast cancer cases in the state of Alabama this year. Breast cancer death rates have begun to decline due to the advancements in treatment and detection but our patients currently must drive over 30-mile one way if they need or want to have access to 3D mammography.
The proposed Breast Center will expand the screening offerings to include 2D imaging, 3D imaging bone density screening and stereotactic biopsy.
The establishment of a Breast Center in the community will be a significant resource to improve access to screening services that can lead to better outcomes for our patients. While rural areas have lower incidence of cancer than urban areas, they have higher cancer death rates.
The CDC recommends the following strategies to reduce the gaps in new cancer cases and deaths. Healthcare providers in rural areas are encouraged to promote healthy behaviors, increase cancer screenings, education and support for cancer survivors.
Help us Give Health by increasing cancer screenings in our community!
