The average wait time for a publicly funded autism assessment for is 2-3 years. Those precious years without a diagnosis and additional funding and support can be detrimental to these BC kids and their families.
Arjan has been waiting for an autism assessment. At almost 2 years old, he was suspected of having Autism. Arjan's language and behaviour presented below the expected range for his age and was observed to be developing in an atypical fashion.
His family applied for an autism assessment grant a few weeks ago and he was able to get his assessment shortly after, where he was confirmed to have autism.
Having this official diagnosis has now opened up a lot of doors for Arjan and his family!
"As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, I appreciate the role early diagnosis and assessment can play in the long-term well-being and inclusion of both the child and their family. We are thrilled to be partnering with Variety to help bring these critical resources to families who may otherwise not have the means to access support in a timely manner."
