Story

It's been over one year since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and thousands of refugees remain in prison-like conditions within Emirates Humanitarian City (EHC). Many of these refugees are legal professionals, the majority of whom are women, and other rule of law advocates.

Recently, ROLI deployed ABA staff and pro bono immigration attorneys to HC and developed an intake process designed to match evacuees with host countries and pro bono legal counsel in those locations. The results of the trip were overwhelmingly positive. In just one week, the team:

> Recruited approximately 30 Afghan evacuee legal professionals to be volunteer liaisons within EHC.
> Conducted interviews with Afghan legal professionals and matched them with attorneys, serving nearly 250 evacuees.
> Helped approximately 500 Afghans secure onward movement from EHC.

While the ABA has assisted hundreds of Afghans with onward movement, what was supposedly a temporary refuge in Abu Dhabi has turned into long-term uncertainty and fear for those stranded in the camp. Now that we see progress from EHC, the ABA is working to expand the program to other countries where Afghan evacuees remain waiting to move on toward permanent settlement.

Your gift today will assist refugees from Afghanistan in securing safety and settlement.
