Community HousingWorks: Honoring Affordable Housing Month Through Stability, and Opportunity
At Community HousingWorks (CHW), Affordable Housing Month is a time to reflect on what we’ve built—and to look ahead at what’s possible when everyone has a place to call home.
Since 1988, CHW has been creating affordable rental communities that do more than provide housing—we build futures. With over 52 communities across 21 cities and 10 counties, we are proud to serve more than 12,000 residents in California and Texas.
A Legacy of Impact
For more than 35 years, CHW has been a trusted leader in affordable housing development:
1988: Founded in Escondido by social justice advocates as the North County Housing Foundation
2007: Opened SOLARA, California’s first solar-powered affordable apartment community
2012: Launched our award-winning eviction prevention and financial well-being programs
2022: Expanded outside California with a community near Houston, Texas
2023: Celebrated 35 years of impact, serving over 12,000 residents
More Than Housing
At CHW, housing is just the beginning. Our communities thrive because of our commitment to wrap-around services that help residents succeed through three core pillars:
Next Generation Success – Preparing youth for academic and lifelong achievement
Financial Well-Being – Empowering adults with tools for financial stability and growth
Health & Wellness – Supporting healthy lifestyles and independent aging for seniors and adults with disabilities
As we celebrate Affordable Housing Month, we renew our commitment to advancing housing equity and creating meaningful change in our communities. We're working toward a future where residents of all ages have the chance to grow, connect, and thrive—right where they live.
Affordable housing is more than just providing a roof overhead. It’s about fostering dignity, expanding opportunity, and building a more just and inclusive future for everyone.
