ELENA WALLACE: VALUE BEYOND THE GAME
"My single mom is raising five of us kids - it hasn't been easy. But my athletic scholarship has been a huge blessing that allows me to attend school and play a sport I love while not having to burden my family financially," shared Elena Wallace.
Raised in Reno, Nevada, Wallace moved to Utah with her mom and four siblings to be closer to family. She is now in her second year at SLCC and plays volleyball and beach volleyball for the college. "The whole coaching staff was so amazing during the recruiting process, and when I started looking into college, it was the SLCC volleyball coach that made me want to start at SLCC."
Being a part of athletics at SLCC has allowed her to meet some incredible people, learn about other cultures from her international teammates and improve as a player and as a person. Wallace is working on an associate's degree in general studies and plans to transfer to a four-year university. She also hopes to play volleyball at the D1 level. Reflecting on the future, Wallace shared, "I have a lot of athletic goals for myself, and I am hoping to continue to figure out my future - my time at SLCC has played a huge role in my personal growth, and I am just really thankful."
